This is not salem thattu vadai set, but a recipe which I have tasted since my childhood and still tasting every time I go to my native place, Gobichettipalayam. The same small shop which is selling only these thattu vadai sets is still continuing to sell them and selling only them. The ingredients I guessed exactly matched with the recipe and I got the exact taste that I expected.
The ingredients will go all raw for this recipe for the sandwiching chutney. Red chutney made up of mainly red chilies along with onion, garlic, little bit tamarind, mint leaves, coriander leaves, carrot, beetroot are used to sandwich between the thattu vadais. I made it very hot using 10 red chillies, but we can use one or two red chillies also according to our taste. I made thattu vadais on my own here, but we can use the store bought ones also.
All you have to do is to put them all together in a mixer and grind them nicely and sandwich them in between thattu vadais and serve. That’s it.
This is a perfect winter recipe. We will crave it on winter evenings and on rainy evenings. Very easy to make in minutes and serve if we have few thattu vadais on hand.
We can use this chutney for making kara pori (spicy puffed rice) too by mixing this chutney in pori (puffed rice).

Thattu Vadai Set / Thattu Vadai Sandwich
A spicy sandwich made with thattu vadai (a traditional snack in South India) and red chutney.
- 1 no Onion
- 2 no Garlic pods
- 1 handful Mint leaves
- 1 handful Coriander leaves
- 1 inch Tamarind piece Small ball
- 1/2 piece Carrot
- 1/2 piece Beetroot
- 10 no Red Chillies Adjust as per your taste
- Salt as per taste
- 10+ Thattu vadais As per availability
Put all the ingredients in a mixer jar and grind them.
Sandwich the red chutney in between two thattu vadais and serve.
