Onion Tomato Chutney

Breakfast or Dinner, this onion tomato chutney is a perfect combination for both dosa and idli. We can’t see a dosa or idli recipe in restaurants without this chutney as one of the side dishes.

An easy chutney recipe for a quick breakfast and dinner, which can be prepared in a maximum of 15 minutes. A good match for Sambar and Coconut chutney.  Sharing here my style of onion tomato chutney which will make the plain dosa and idli into a wonderful breakfast/dinner.

Onion Tomato Chutney

A blend of cooked onion and tomato grinded into a paste - delicious chutney for dosa and idli.

  • 2 no Big Onions
  • 2 no Tomatoes
  • 2 or 3 no Red Chilli
  • 1 tbsp Urad dal for chutney
  • 1 tsp Urad dal for seasoning
  • 1 tsp Mustard for seasoning
  • 1 tbsp Oil
  • Salt as needed


  1. Chop onion and tomato.

  2. In a frying pan, heat 1 tsp oil and add urad dal and fry until golden brown.

    Then add onion followed by tomato and saute them until tomato is mushy.

    Wait for some time to get the heat off from them. Grind them in a mixie along with red chilli and salt as needed. 

  3. Head 1 tsp oil in a pan. Add musturd to splutter followed by ural dal. Turn off the flame. Add this to the grinded chutney.

    Onion tomato chutney is ready to taste with dosa or idli.

Recipe Notes

There is no correct ratio for the number of onions and tomatoes. We can increase the onion numbers or tomatoes as per our wish.

Adding tomato will give sourness to the recipe, but tastes well for those who love sourness.
