How to prepare restaurant style mushroom butter masala at home?

Mushroom, a nutritious vegan food, gives us vegetarian recipes equivalent to non-veg ones. Considering the low calories and high nutrition in mushroom, including mushroom often in our routine food in different forms will fulfill necessary nutrients that we lose from daily activities without increasing our weight.

This mushroom butter masala is a famous restaurant recipe which is very similar to the paneer butter masala, in which instead of paneer we are using mushrooms.

Kids’ friendly recipe, as the gravy is a richer one with cashew, butter, and fresh cream. The restaurant style recipe includes these three which gives them the richer and nice look to the recipe, which we admire during eating out.

The refreshing taste of cashew with melted butter and fresh cream on top will nourish our hungry taste buds and will give us the fulfillment when we take this recipe as a side dish for roti, chapathi, Phulka, naan, or even dosa.

Mushroom Butter Masala / Kaalan Masala

  • 200 g Mushroom
  • 3 no Big Onions
  • 1 no Tomato
  • 1 tbsp Ginger-Garlic paste
  • 1 tsp Garam masala powder
  • 1 tsp Chilli powder
  • 1 tbsp Butter
  • 1 tbsp Fresh cream
  • 6 no Cashews soaked in water and grinded in mixie
  • 1 tbsp Oil
  • Salt as needed
  • Coriander leaves for garnishing


  1. Cut mushrooms into half and set aside.

    Chop onions and tomato.

    Soak cashews in water and grind in a mixie.

  2. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a kadai.

    Add chopped onions and fry until onion turns translucent.

  3. Add ginger-garlic paste into it and fry for half a minute.

    Add tomato to it and fry until tomato dissolves.

  4. Add garam masala powder, chilli powder, and salt and mix them.

    Add half a cup of water and stir them for a minute.

  5. Add mushrooms and fry them until water evaporates and mushrooms reduce in size a bit.

    Add enough water to cook mushrooms and close with a lid.

  6. When mushrooms are cooked well, add cashew grinded milk into it and mix well.

    Add butter and fresh cream one by one and mix them.

  7. Garnish with butter, fresh cream, and coriander leaves on top.

    Yummy Mushroom Butter Masala is ready to serve hot with Chapathi, Phulka, Naan, or Roti.
